New 30km Expressway to Link JNPT to Pune Highway

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to construct a new 30km expressway connecting Pagote near Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to Chauk Junction on the old Pune Highway. This project aims to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and important destinations like Goa, Pune, and Navi Mumbai.

Project Details

Cost and Route: The expressway, estimated to cost Rs 3,700 crore, will span 30 km. It will begin at Pagote and follow the Uran-Chirner Highway, starting as Amra Marg from Navi Mumbai, before merging with the Goa Highway and Pune Expressway.

Travel Time Reduction: The new corridor is expected to cut travel time from Mumbai to the Goa Highway by 20-30 minutes.

Connectivity: Multiple entry and exit points along the route will improve travel convenience. The expressway will also connect with the Coastal Road and Sea Link near Worli at the Sewri end of Atal Setu.

Future Expansions

The expressway is planned to extend beyond the old Pune Highway, linking with several other important routes:

  • Alibaug-Virar Multimodal Corridor
  • Murbad-Junnar Highway
  • Samruddhi Expressway
  • Nashik Highway near Padgha
  • Vadodara-Mumbai Greenfield Expressway (part of the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor project)

These extensions will create a comprehensive ring road network, enabling uninterrupted travel between key areas such as JNPT, Goa, Pune, and Mumbai.

Impact and Benefits

Traffic Management: The expressway is expected to handle over 10,000 vehicles daily, including multi-axle container trucks, reducing congestion in critical junctions like Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Kalamboli.

Land Acquisition: Approximately 176 hectares of land will be required for the project.

Economic Growth: By improving logistical efficiency in port and airport zones, the project is anticipated to drive industrial growth and boost the economy.

Project Timeline

  • Construction is likely to begin in seven months
  • The initial phase is expected to be completed within 30 months
  • NHAI officials are preparing to issue work orders soon for the six-lane greenfield corridor

This expressway project represents a significant step towards improving infrastructure and connectivity in the Mumbai region, with potential far-reaching effects on transportation and economic development.
