The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, is facing mounting pressure from increasing traffic volume and safety concerns. To address these challenges, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has proposed a significant upgrade: expanding the expressway to eight lanes.

The Need for Expansion

Currently, the six-lane expressway handles a staggering 155,000 vehicles daily, leading to frequent traffic congestion and accidents. This expansion project aims to alleviate these issues and ensure smoother, safer travel for commuters.

Project Details

The ambitious project will be executed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Road and Bridge Widening This phase will focus on widening the existing roads and bridges along the expressway.
  • Phase 2: Tunnel Expansion The second phase will involve expanding the tunnels to accommodate the increased traffic flow.

Land acquisition for Phase 1 is already complete, allowing construction to commence swiftly once the project receives final approval. Land acquisition for Phase 2 is also expected to proceed without major hurdles.

Funding and Timeline

The MSRDC submitted a detailed proposal to the state government in February 2024, outlining the project’s scope and estimated cost of ₹6,080 crore. The project is currently awaiting approval, with potential funding options including state budget allocation or an extension of the toll collection period. If approved, the project is expected to be completed by 2028-29.

Expected Benefits

The eight-lane expansion is projected to bring significant improvements to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway:

  • Reduced Congestion: Easing traffic flow and decreasing travel time between the two cities.
  • Enhanced Safety: Improving road safety by reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Improved Travel Experience: Providing a more efficient and comfortable journey for commuters.

This expansion project represents a crucial step in modernizing the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and ensuring it can handle the growing demands of traffic while prioritizing the safety and convenience of travelers.
