Pune-Mumbai Expressway Expansion: Eight Lanes for Smoother Travel

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has proposed a major expansion of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, increasing its capacity from six to eight lanes. This project aims to address the growing traffic congestion on this vital route, which currently handles an average of 150,000 vehicles per day.

Widening the Expressway

The proposed expansion will add an extra lane on each side of the expressway, creating a continuous eight-lane highway for smoother and faster travel between Pune and Mumbai. Key sections targeted for widening include the stretch from the Khalapur toll plaza to the Khopoli exit and the area starting from the Urse toll plaza.

Project Timeline and Approval

The MSRDC has submitted the proposal to the Maharashtra State Government for approval. Once approved, the project is expected to be completed within three years.

The Missing Link Project

In addition to the eight-lane expansion, the “Missing Link” project, a 13.3 km alternative road connecting Khopoli Exit to Kusgaon, is also progressing rapidly. This project includes two tunnels and the construction of Asia’s largest valley bridge.

Benefits of the Expansion

The eight-lane expansion and the Missing Link project are expected to bring significant benefits to travelers on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway:

  • Reduced Congestion: The increased capacity will help alleviate traffic jams and improve traffic flow.
  • Faster Travel Times: Commuters and transporters can expect shorter and more efficient travel times between Pune and Mumbai.
  • Enhanced Safety: Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion will contribute to a safer driving experience.

A Major Infrastructure Upgrade

The expansion of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway represents a major infrastructure upgrade for the region. By addressing the current capacity constraints and improving connectivity, this project will benefit both commuters and businesses, contributing to the economic growth and development of the area.
