The Pune-Mumbai Expressway, a major route connecting two of Maharashtra’s key cities, was recently hit with a massive traffic jam, leaving holiday travelers stranded for hours. The congestion was caused by a surge in traffic as people headed to popular tourist destinations like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, and Goa for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The worst affected area was the Khandala Ghat section, where a 12-kilometer traffic jam formed, starting on Wednesday. Thousands of private vehicles poured onto the expressway, causing significant delays and frustration for travelers.
Adding to the chaos were vehicle breakdowns and the sheer volume of traffic on both the expressway and the old Pune-Mumbai highway. This led to gridlock in several areas, leaving many travelers stuck in their vehicles for extended periods.
In response to the situation, police and highway authorities implemented measures to manage the traffic flow and assist stranded travelers. However, the sheer volume of vehicles made it challenging to resolve the congestion quickly.
Frustrated commuters took to social media to express their concerns, reporting delays of more than two hours. Many highlighted the need for better traffic management strategies during peak holiday seasons.
To prevent similar situations in the future, authorities are urging travelers to plan their trips in advance, avoid peak travel times, and ensure their vehicles are well-maintained to prevent breakdowns. They also recommend considering alternative routes or using public transportation whenever possible.
