The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning to build two new bus depots along the Dwarka Expressway to improve public transportation options in newly developed areas. These areas currently have limited bus service, making it difficult for residents to get around.
Land Acquisition
The GMDA has identified two plots of land for the new depots:
- 7 acres in Daulatabad village
- 9.5 acres in Mohammad Heri village
These locations were chosen for their strategic position along the Dwarka Expressway and the outer Dwarka Expressway. The GMDA has requested the transfer of these land parcels from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).
Improving Public Transportation
The proposed bus depots are expected to enhance connectivity and make it easier for people to travel to and from the newer sectors of Gurugram. This will benefit residents and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Expanding Bus Infrastructure
In addition to the new depots, the GMDA is also working on setting up 154 bus queue shelters in new sectors. These shelters will provide safe and convenient waiting areas for passengers and help ensure smooth traffic flow.
The GMDA is also planning a third bus depot and an electric substation in Sector 48. Construction of the Sector 48 depot is already underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Increasing Bus Fleet
Currently, 150 buses are operating in Gurugram under the Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL). The GMDA is working to increase the bus fleet to meet the growing demand for public transportation. The central government has also approved funding for electric buses, which are expected to be added to the fleet in the coming months.
Meeting Future Needs
According to a comprehensive mobility plan, Gurugram will need 1,550 buses by 2026 to serve its growing population. The GMDA’s efforts to expand bus infrastructure and increase the bus fleet are crucial steps towards meeting this goal and providing efficient and reliable public transportation for the city.
